Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has shifted the Uchembere Wabwino Relay Race from early November to sometime in December.

AAM president Godfrey Phiri said yesterday that they have shifted the countrywide event aimed at raising about K30 million (about $75 000) for Safe Motherhood Initiative to finalise paperwork ahead of signing agreements with stakeholders, including Safe Motherhood Initiative coordinator Senior Chief Kwataine.

The 1600-kilometre race will stretch from Songwe border in Karonga to Marka in Nsanje.

“We are currently meeting various stakeholders on how to make this event exciting. Apart from that, we want to make a strong and durable proposal that can let us sustain the event annually,” said Phiri.

AAM said 60 percent of the proceeds will go towards the Uchembere Wabwino Initiative while the rest will be used for athletics administration in the country.

The event is expected to involve at least 50 athletes divided into three groups to run at 10-kilometre intervals. The first group of 20 athletes will take turns to run from Karonga to Lilongwe, another group of 15 from Lilongwe to Zomba and the other 15 from Zomba to Nsanje.

Companies will be allowed to pay a minimum of K20 000 (about $50 000) per kilometre to enable them to erect their banners on the route.
